The illumigene® Malaria DNA amplification assay, performed on the illumipro-10™, is a qualitative in vitro diagnostic test for the direct detection of Plasmodium spp. DNA in human venous EDTA whole blood specimens from individuals with signs and symptoms of malarial infection. The assay targets a region of the Plasmodium genome that is conserved across Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi. Results from illumigene® Malaria assays are intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of human malaria infection. The test does not require specialized laboratory equipment.
"Whilst Good Laboratory Practice is vital illumigene® proved easy to use and both Microbiology and Haematology staff now perform this test which is particularly useful “out of hours”. The whole test process can be completed in under an hour with only a few minutes’ hands on time required.
As the first laboratory in Great Britain to use the Meridian illumigene® Malaria kit we would recommend it as an aid to malaria diagnosis. In addition we found Meridian Bioscience a professional and helpful company to have dealings with.
